Young Knight Makes a Difference

Jason Dombrowski

Jason Dombrowski, 24, is coordinating technology activities at the convention registration desk. As a D.C. district deputy, he helps young Knights make the transition from college to adult life.

What do you do when you’re young, college educated, tech savvy and out to change the world? You join the Knights of Columbus.

That’s the path chosen by Jason Dombrowski, a 24-year-old district deputy for the District of Columbia. In the history, structure, size and fraternal strength of the Knights of Columbus, he sees an organization that can turn into reality the positive values and powerful idealism of his generation.

Dombrowski said that a common misperception is that members of the millennial generation are not joiners. They will join worthy causes if they can make a significant difference in a personal and measurable way, he said.

“This generation sees itself as different. They are the first that has grown up completely with the new technology, so they see the world and how to engage it differently,” he observed. “They want to find new ways to solve the same problems of the world. There’s a lot of energy and idealism, and I think the Knights of Columbus is a great organization to put that to good use. But it’s a challenge.”

Supreme Convention Success

E-mail Print PDF

128th_Logo_AdjustedThe 128th Supreme Convention held in our very own jurisdiction was a great success.  Many of the attendees said that this was one of the best conventions they had been to in a long time.  The Supreme Knight (and our Past State Deputy) Carl Anderson expressed his gratitude and thanks for the event that was put on.

We would, of course, be remiss in thanking our volunteers who made the event such a great success.  So a bgt THANK YOU goes out to them.

Highlights

  • The Knights of Columbus announced that they would be paying for prosthetic limbs for any orphan that lost a limb in the Haitian earthquake.
  • The Supreme Knight celebrated his 10th anniversary as the Supreme Knight.
  • Approximately 2,200 attendees were present for one the largest conventions.

On Saturday, July 10th, 2010, the DC Knights of Columbus State Officers and officers from District of Columbia councils were installed in a ceremony held in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.  The installation ceremony invested the new officers of the DC State Council and marked the transition of the previous group led by Lawrence Sosnowich, whose team served for the traditional 2 years.  Taking over will be a new team led by Peter A. Gabauer, Jr., a former District Deputy and Grand Knight of O'Boyle Council located centered at St. Dominic's Church in Southwest.

The ceremony has changed little in the organizations 128 year history and has traditionally involved wives and family members as an important indication of the tireless role they play in support the Officers.  The ceremony was preceded by a mass celebrated by the new State Chaplain, Rev. Frank Donio, SAC, who is himself a decades long member of the DC Knights, having returned a few years ago to DC having first studied here during his undergraduate studies and then as a seminarian.

It was especially appropriate that the DC Knights be installed in the Basilica as the Knights of Columbus have donated extensively to its construction and upkeep, most recently the Incarnation Dome, which was completed last year.   The DC Knights support many churches in the DC area and have maintained a special relationship with Archbishop Wuerl, the Joseph P. Kennedy Institute, and the VA hospital.  While not in attendance, Archbishop Wuerl serves as the honorary State Chaplain and is a member of Catholic University of America Council #9542.

The complete list of State Officers installed on Saturday includes:

  • Peter A Gabauer, State Deputy
  • Rev. Frank Donio SAC, State Chaplain
  • Ernest T Boykin, State Secretary
  • Timothy Saccoccia, State Treasurer
  • Amado Alvarez, State Advocate
  • John Cahill, State Warden
  • District Deputies: Mauro Farinelli, Jason Dombrowski, Derek Lucas, and Joshua Konecni
  • District Warden Brandon Brown
